What is a crown?
- A crown is a tooth-shape cap that covers the chewing surface and sides of your tooth. It is typically made of porcelain and is used to restore the shape and function of a broken down tooth.
What is an onlay?
- An onlay is similar to a crown, however an onlay only covers a portion of the tooth. These are used when a defect or cavity is too large to fix with a filling, but not bad enough to need a crown.
When can I eat on my new crown?
- Your new crown will be secure the moment we sit you up in the dental chair. You can eat whatever you like, as soon as you are comfortable.
Can I still get a cavity under a crown?
- You can absolutely get a cavity under your crown. The crown covers a large portion of your tooth. Near the gum line there is still an area where the crown meets your natural tooth. This area may be prone to tooth decay coming back, especially if you drink sugary drinks or don’t brush your teeth.
